Tuesday’s Design Tip for Graphic Designers

I was speaking to a designer last week and she said something to me that boggled my mind. She said that she didn’t really keep up with the history of graphic design and trends.

Why? Because it will unduly influence her design and she didn’t want to be a copycat.

Honestly, I didn’t know what to say…

I like learning about graphic design for the following reasons:

  • It helps if I’m trying to establish the look and feel of an era (50’s or 70’s)
  • Avoid the mistakes of past designers
  • Learn how most of design theory came about.
  • Great for stimulating my own ideas and designs (sort of like a swipe file)
  • Sound smart when talking to others and I know my history!

I’m reminded of a famous maxim: “Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it … “
