Keep your business cards with you at all times
Monday’s Promote Tip for Graphic Designers
Over the weekend, I attended a birthday luncheon with a group of about 12 people. Honestly, I’m not sure how many we were, but certainly over 10.
One of them has his own company and his wife said when I came up to the table, “Oh, Jer, Maria here is a graphic designer. Maybe you can ask her.”
Turns out that he has had a lot of trouble hiring graphic designers to work for him. He had gone through quite a few designers that were (as he put it) “cheap and the not so cheap.” None had captured what he was after.
What he asked next made me cringe
He then asked for my business card so that we can connect and discuss the possibility of working together.
Ordinarily, I would be thrilled. But today I felt like saying with my Homer Simpson imitation “DOH!”
Since this was a personal luncheon rather than a professional one, I (of course) didn’t bring my business cards with me.
So, I suggested he visit my website. (I didn’t know what else to say, honest!)
Of course, he replies that he has a really bad memory.
So, I took his coordinates down and got in touch with him later. I also told him that I’d mail him my business cards so he can have it on hand.
VALUABLE LESSON LEARNED:
Even if it’s just a luncheon or going to the dry cleaner, you never know when you will meet your next client. Always, always, always keep your business cards on hand!
ALWAYS.
