Monday’s Promotion Tip for Graphic Designers

So, you’ve jumped in and decided to start a newsletter to promote your business.

You’ve created your first issue and then wonder… Now what?

First things first

You definitely want to get some kind of email autoresponder system that keeps track of all your subscribers. When I started my newsletter, I didn’t and boy do I regret it.

If you opt to try and handle things yourself, it will be manageable for a short time. However, your goal is to build a substantial list. It will soon prove too much to handle. And you will have to do everything manually, rather than setting up autoresponders that do things automatically. It will be very time consuming.

If this doesn’t convince you how about the fact that if you send out too many emails, you may blacklisted? Your emails will be considered SPAM. So, your readers won’t even get your mail. It kind of defeats the whole purpose.

From the get-go invest in one. You will be glad you did!

Next, getting it in the hands of your subscribers:

The next big question is how do you get it into the hands of your faithful readers?

There are a few ways you can send out your newsletter to your list:

  1. Email the newsletter: You send out an email that includes the text for the newsletter. The email will either be in HTML or text format. Beware that some email providers prefer text emails.
  2. Email a link to the newsletter: For this one you will create a webpage with the text of the newsletter. The body of your email can include some teaser text of the newsletter with a link to the webpage. This is a great way of driving traffic to your site and can boost search engine traffic.
  3. Email the newsletter as a PDF: You can send out a PDF of the newsletter with your email. Either have a hybrid (text within the email and a PDF attachment) or simply add some teaser copy and the PDF attached.
  4. Email the newsletter with a link to the PDF: You can instead set up a webpage with the newsletter and include a PDF for download there.

How do you decide which way is right for you?

It boils down to your goals. Short term and also your long term goals.

  • Are you looking to drive traffic to your website? Then you may opt for the easy way of setting up a webpage with the copy of your newsletter. This helps you quickly update your site on a regular basis and also promotes search engine traffic.
  • Do you have any plans for the newsletter? Do you want to repackage them into an e-book product? Or, do you want it to entice readers to sign up for a membership site or some other venture?
  • Do you want them to have a physical copy of the newsletter? Or do you want to leverage them as a bonus for another product and/or service?

C O N C L U S I O N :

The way you send out your newsletter is something that needs to be well thought-out.

You must know what your long term goals are for your newsletter. Then choose the appropriate way of sending the newsletter out that won’t compromise your ultimate goals.
