Choosing graphic elements to add impact
Tuesday’s Design Tip for Graphic Designers
I was going through my swipe file, trying to scale it down (as if that’s possible) and was looking all the pieces I liked and included in there.
The one thing I noticed is that good design makes use of graphic elements besides just type and pictures. There’s a complexity in the design that at first glance, you fail to notice.
A list of common graphic elements you can use to spruce up your designs:
- Backgrounds
- Shaded and colored boxes
- Vertical and horizontal lines
- Geometric shapes (circles, triangles, etc…)
- Bullets
- Tints and shades
How do you decide what to add?
- Do you have a symbol in your logo you can use?
- Is there something you can think of that is associated with your company that you can use?
- Is there a shape that is closely associated with your products or services?
- What look and feel are you going for in your publications?
- Is there something that is already in use?
- What are your competitors doing?
C O N C L U S I O N :
Graphic elements help set the mood. You want to use these elements repetitively and consistently throughout your materials. They should become a part of your brand and builds familiarity with your clients.
